Before it was Automobile Alley - Broadway, circa 1997.

Terry Taylor, a veteran downtowner and former assistant city planner, has  shared these great photos showing the dramatic transformation of Broadway, now known as Automobile Alley. Believe or not, the before photos don't show Broadway at its worst. These photos were taken after the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building and some building clean up had already taken place.

The most intriguing then and now in this group, in my opinion, is the transformation of the old C.R. Anthony's headquarters. The building dates back to the city's early days, but was badly gummed up with a fake facade sometime after the 1950s. Notice how a lot of the windows were eliminated. It's an odd design by today's standards, but not unusual for our city. The AT&T Building further down the street, built in the early 1970s, was also designed with a shocking sparce amount of windows.

Developer Nicholas Preftakes didn't attempt to recreate the original building facade. Instead, he gave the building a modern look - one that that fits in well with the surrounding architecture and has fared well as years have passed.
